Founded in 1979, the nonprofit, non-governmental charitable foundation specializes in helping children and families of people who have lost their homes and financial security due to war, poverty, hunger, natural disasters and terrorist attacks. Since its inception, the organization has distributed more than 50,000 tons of humanitarian aid (food, clothing, basic necessities) to families living in 50 states and 23 countries around the world.

“Natural gifts” or, simply put, humanitarian aid is the main category of aid. Funds for those in need are rare: direct material aid accounts for about 20% of the organization’s total budget.

The Children’s Aid Foundation was among the top 50 largest nonprofit organizations in the United States, ranking 15th in 2013 (according to Forbes). The organization is highly regarded in the country: it has almost maximum credibility ratings in many financial structures.

Center for Excellence in Disaster Management and Humanitarian Assistance

It is one of the few government foundations significantly influencing the tradition of American philanthropy. The Center for Disaster Relief and Humanitarian Assistance is under the control of the Pacific Command and has been led at various times by military officers.

The primary purpose of the organization, which combines specific humanitarian missions and philanthropic work, is to organize international cooperation, promote education, train professionals, and research that will enable effective disaster response.

The Center was created to develop possibilities for rendering accessible humanitarian aid and effective liquidation of consequences of emergency situations: terrorist acts, impact of nuclear and chemical weapons. In other words, a paramilitary-type charity teaches and trains people who specialize in working in disaster zones, dealing with the consequences and helping the population. But, of course, not all U.S. charities work in such global directions.

Foundation in the United States American Cancer Society

The American Cancer Society represents charitable organizations in the United States that work toward one specific goal. In this case, it is the fight against cancer. This organization finances areas related to scientific research on cancer prevention, invests in the optimization of methods of research of patients, reduction of their suffering, effective treatment.

The foundation is one of the oldest. It was founded in 1913 by 15 doctors and businessmen from New York City. The original name “American Cancer Society” was changed to the modern name in 1945.

One of the main events the foundation organizes to raise awareness and funds is the Relay for Life. Now students, military personnel, active citizens of the United States, as well as residents of 21 countries around the world who have adopted such an interesting experience are holding their relay races as part of this event.

For the first time, the Relay for Life was conducted by surgeon Gordy Klatt, who ran 24 hours to raise money for the foundation.

Music For Relief

This foundation confirms that charity in the U.S. is an honorary duty not only for millionaire businessmen and statesmen, but also for rather odious representatives of show business. The members of the famous rock band Linkin Park established Music For Relief to help the victims of natural disasters and to draw the world’s attention to environmental problems (especially global warming). The organization was founded in 2005.

Since its inception, more than $3.9 million has been donated to help people affected by the

• the California wildfire in 2007;
• the 2011 earthquake in Japan.

With these donations, the Foundation was able to fund the planting of 355,000 trees in order to reduce the effects of global warming.

The most important fundraising event organized by the foundation is the benefit concert, which includes the participation of U.S. biggest stars.

Partners In Health

Founded in 1987, Partners in Health is a nonprofit hospital that serves a segment of the low-income population. It is headquartered in Boston.

The foundation was founded by Dr. Paul Farmer and Dr. Jim Kim, along with Ophelia Dahl, Todd McCormack, and Thomas White. The main activity of the organization is to raise funds from local foundations and business structures to provide medical care for people who cannot afford to pay for treatment or insurance.

Over the years the organization has become international: a similar approach has been implemented to treat poor people in Peru, Rwanda, Haiti, Guatemala, and Mexico from serious diseases (AIDS and tuberculosis).

The Alliance (SEA) defines itself as “a membership organization whose purpose is to create a social enterprise movement aimed at mobilizing the community of non-profit organizations and donors to promote profit-making strategies. The Alliance was formed in 2002 after the merger of two organizations: The National Gathering for Social Entrepreneurs (founded 1998) and SeaChange (founded 2000).

Today, the Alliance is governed by a Board of Directors that includes leading experts in social entrepreneurship, academia, law, and management.

The Alliance provides a toolkit for improving the work of social enterprises. For example, SEA can provide its members with a database of scholarly articles, business plans, and templates for creating and organizing social enterprises. The website and social network page also play an important role in the structure of information support for Association members.

The unifying meaning of SEA is to expand the members of the community at the national level, introducing representatives of one direction of social entrepreneurship from different states. For this purpose, SEA chapters are created all over the United States.

On the local level, SEA’s work is especially visible. Each chapter organizes at least four educational projects a year, takes an active part in lawmaking at the local level. As of January 1, 2014, there are 16 chapters in 14 states across the United States.

Membership is based on annual dues proportional to the organization’s income. Membership is possible at a discounted rate if there is no corporate profit.

The main types of interaction with social entrepreneurs are made through:

• Annual Social Entrepreneur Summit

One of SEA’s major projects is organizing and hosting a Social Entrepreneurship Summit.

The first meeting was held in Seattle in 1998 and was attended by 182 representatives of social enterprises and donor organizations. It was initiated by six master social entrepreneurs (Jerr Boschee, Jed Emerson, Gary Mulhaire, John Riggan, Billy Shore, and Richard Steckel). On August 13, 1997, they decided to organize a similar convention. The reason for the first Summit was the lack of communication between social entrepreneurs even within one state.

Since 1998, the Summit has been held every year or every two years in different cities in the United States.

The Summit lasts two or three days during which speeches are held by specialists in various fields, which are an integral part of the quality of social enterprise, master classes, round tables (exchange of experiences, discussion of current issues), educational programs, presentations of social projects of the Summit participants.

Such a way of interaction between individuals and legal entities interested in the development of social entrepreneurship, according to statements of the SEA leadership and feedback from SEA members, is productive. On this basis, since 2008 the World Social Entrepreneurship Forum has been held all over the world together with the sister organizations. In 2010 the Forum gathered 730 representatives from 31 countries.
